In Lithuanian mythology the Rue plant (Ruta) represents a woman's purity and virginity
this song takes places just at the break of dawn, the dew is settling on the stacks of wheat in the field, and a mother is singing to her daughter, who seems soon to be married off
the singer speaks of a strapping young man coming to cut down the rue plant (a metaphor for losing virginity)
the mother tries to comfort her daughter and offers her to take dark bread and salt, reminiscent of an old pagan wedding ritual where the two families exchange bread and salt as a metaphor for the union of bride and groom
